The Royal Pleco is an extraordinary fish that can be a rewarding addition to your aquarium. With its unique appearance and intriguing behaviour, it is sure to be a conversation starter. However, it requires a dedicated aquarist who is willing to provide the right care and environment. Scientifically known as Panaque armbrusteri, this captivating freshwater fish lives mainly in the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers of South America. These waters are typically dense with submerged wood and vegetation, creating a natural environment rich in food sources and hiding places, essential for the Pleco's well-being and natural behaviour. It belongs to the family Loricariidae. Native to the rivers of South America, it thrives in fast-flowing streams with plenty of wood debris. One of the most striking features of the Royal Pleco L027 is its colouring. It sports a dark body with light yellow to white lines or spots, creating a mesmerising pattern. Each fish has a unique pattern, making them a fascinating subject for fish enthusiasts.
Origin: Brazil: Brazil - Xingu River
Diet: Every Panaque seems to feed on wood, so wood must be present in the tank. Royal plecos eat algae-based foods, such as wafers and granules, but also accept meatier foods in the form of tablets and prepared foods, and fresh vegetables (courgette, cucumber, peas, green beans) and tubers (potato, yam and similar), frozen. Offering a varied diet is one of the real keys to long-term success with Royal Plecos.
FURNISHINGS: The natural habitat is among fallen trees and tangles of wood.
Water parameters:
Temperature: 25 -29 C
pH: 6.6 to 7.5
Temperature 23.0-27.0°C
Adult size: 50 cm
Aquarium size: Due to their large adult size, the ideal aquarium for Royal Plecos will be at least 450 litres and preferably larger.
Behaviour and compatibility:
Generally peaceful, but they may defend their territory against members of the same species.
Lighting and maintenance:
Although lighting is not a critical aspect for the well-being of Plecos, subdued lighting helps to imitate their natural habitat and reduces stress. Regular tank maintenance, including vacuuming the substrate and cleaning the glass, is essential to prevent the build-up of waste and uneaten food, ensuring a healthy environment for your pleco.
